The Mod Nats format this year is different than most major U.S. races. Normally we practice Monday through Thursday with two qualifiers Friday, two Saturday, and the mains Sunday. But this year attendance at the Mod Nats is down almost 100 entries from last year, with just 180 total entries and 70 buggies. |
Brian Kinwald is still too sick to attend, and Travis Amezcua experienced a death in the family and can't be here. (Our condolences to the Amezcua family.) On the AE side, Scott Brown had to stay in Seattle at his store/track, and Jason Ruona had to stay in Florida to work. |
At 6PM on Thursday they stopped practice and held a set practice qualifying heats, so everybody got to run just once between 6 and 8:30PM. Of course, everyone was timed with transponders and IFMAR starts were used. The track is very fast. Essentially it's four straights connected by right-hand corners, some 90 degrees, some 180. |
There's a double followed by a triple in front of the drivers' stand with a 180 immediately after and a straight with two small table tops followed by an off-camber 180 to the left. The premium is on acceleration, and most top drivers are running a turn or even two lower than normal. |
Dave Montgomery ran an 18/5:00 that featured a 15.99 lap and a number of low 16s. Ryan Cavalieri was just a second back on 5:01. Adam Drake led the Losi guys with an 04 and Chad Due was next with 18/5:07 just .2 sec faster than young Steve Hartson. Ryan Maifield was next with a 5:09 to give AE five of the top six. |
Qualifying starts Friday at 9AM with three rounds on tap. Round four and the mains will be Sunday. Stay tuned, we'll have results as fast as fast as we can get them. |
